‘Sex for grades’ is also galamsey – Anyidoho jabs Gyampo over UTAG’s strike

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho has subtly jabbed Senior Lecturer of the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo for playing a key role in the strike action by the University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG) likening it to ‘sex for grades’ in the University claiming it is another type of galamsey.

During an interview on Kingdom FM monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Koku Anyidoho applauded Organized Labour for paying heed to the President after their last meeting to call off their intended strike.

He however slammed UTAG and the University of Ghana Branch President Prof Gyampo for their strike decision.

According to him, in every profession, there is a form of “galamsey” involved in it. He cited Prof Gyampo’s sex for grades exposé which was released by BBC describing it as a galamsey activity.

“There are different types of Galmsey activities. Every profession has its own galamsey. The one we are all talking about now is the gold galamsey but in the Universities, if you are a lecturer and you sleep with your students for grades, it’s also galamsey. It is an illegal activity. If you are a policeman and you take a bribe it’s galamsey.” he compared and contrasted.

Koku Anyidoho slammed Prof. Gyampo for calling for the ban of mining sites due to illegal mining activities. “Did we close down Universities after you were caught in your scandal?” Koku Anyidoho questioned.

Background

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) announced in the late hours of yesterday that it will proceed with its industrial action against illegal mining on Thursday, October 10, 2024, despite Organized Labour’s decision to suspend its planned strike following the government’s pledge to address the issue.

In a referendum on Wednesday, October 9, UTAG members overwhelmingly supported the motion to strike, with 77.95% (2,153 votes) in favour, 21.98% (607 votes) against, and 0.07% (2 votes) abstaining.

The National Executive Council of UTAG unanimously declared an immediate and indefinite strike across all 15 UTAG branches, effective Thursday.
