Five individuals have been apprehended in Atuuna, a village within the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region, for their involvement in illegal mining.
The group consists of four Ghanaians and one Chinese national.
The arrests were made through the collaborative efforts of the Paramount Chief of Wenchi, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako, and local authorities.
The operation took place on Tuesday (15 January) at 5:00 PM while the suspects were actively engaged in mining activities.
Authorities confiscated four excavators, two washing machines, and two Ford F-150 vehicles during the raid. Rainford Oware, the Special Aid to Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako, confirmed the arrests and clarified that several miners had been summoned by the Omanhene for questioning before their detention.
The operation also led to the identification of other individuals involved in illegal mining. The arrested suspects have been handed over to the Wenchi Police for further legal action.
Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako emphasised that the Ghana Police Service must ensure that the miners restore the damaged land and face appropriate legal penalties.
He further stated that any chief found complicit in illegal mining within Wenchi would be destooled and arrested. The Omanhene urged the Wenchi Police to take decisive action against those engaging in such activities.
On 5 January 2025, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako had already issued a stern warning to illegal miners in the region, demanding they cease their activities or face severe legal consequences.
