Rev. Stephen Wengam, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, addressed the role of pastors in political affairs during an interview on TV3’s Hot Issues, monitored by MyNewsGh.
He emphasized the importance of ethical behaviour, saying, “Political candidates should surround themselves with pastors rather than consult demons or spirits.
This nation should not be handed over to Satan.” He acknowledged that pastors often provide counsel to political leaders but insisted that they must maintain ethical boundaries. “I don’t preach politics from the pulpit,” he added, stressing that prophecy should not be used to influence voters.
He reflected on the wisdom required in leadership, stating, “In Matthew 25, Jesus spoke of five wise virgins and five foolish ones. Wisdom is essential in the Christian faith, and unfortunately, many pastors lack this wisdom when handling their roles and engaging with politics.”
Wengam also touched on the importance of prayer for political leaders, remarking that during past elections, religious leaders have supported various candidates, but it is ultimately God’s will that prevails.
Addressing the issue of political involvement, he noted, “If you have wisdom and maturity, you shouldn’t be offended by the outcome of the elections. Every person, regardless of party affiliation, has a role in shaping the nation.”
Regarding the controversy surrounding ORAL’s project, Wengam shared his concerns. “I believe the president has considered the ORAL project, and Ghanaians are supportive of it, but personal interests should not derail its intentions,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of respecting the law and the rightful ownership of land, citing a Supreme Court ruling confirming the private ownership of the land in question.
In response to the vandalism, Wengam urged, “We must ensure justice is served and prevent such acts from undermining the broader vision.”
He called on the president to intervene and ensure that justice is done for the traditional authorities involved in the land dispute.
