Parliamentary proceedings often serve as the heartbeat of a democratic nation, showcasing the vibrancy of debate and decision-making. However, these moments can sometimes turn contentious, as seen during the recent vetting of President John Mahama’s ministerial appointees.
Security analyst Adam Bonaa has voiced his disappointment over the conduct of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader, during the sessions.
Speaking on GHOne TV with Lantam Papanko, Bonaa did not mince words. “If the minority side is going to go this way, it becomes very difficult,” he remarked, his tone reflecting his concern.
“This is not what we are paying our members of parliament to do. I have to be very honest. It is very disgusting.”
Bonaa’s criticism centered on what he perceived as a lack of decorum and focus from the minority leader and some of his colleagues. He stressed the need for calm and orderly conduct during such critical processes. “I was expecting cool heads.
The chairman is in the chair, and everyone must pay attention to the chair. It is his show. Listen to him, and if you disagree, let the others talk. You will be given the opportunity to talk,” Bonaa explained.
The vetting process, a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy, allows for the rigorous scrutiny of ministerial appointees. Bonaa, however, lamented that the atmosphere was marred by what he described as unnecessary posturing.
“I think the minority leader needs to up his game by toning down,” he advised. “Don’t want to be noticed; let your questions be noticed. His temperament and others were noticed, not his questions.”
