Traditional authorities are demanding justice after property was vandalized in the name of the ORAL project.
A representative of the community, the regent of Okponglo Nii Sowah III stated, “When the wall was being constructed, the chiefs and everyone were present, and it was done properly. But now, look at the damage. They’ve destroyed sections of the wall, and it’s unacceptable.”
He added, “While we’re discussing this, they’ve even stolen the plywood, and it’s concerning. We expect ORAL to address this issue.”
He further appealed to the president, saying in an interview with Joy News monitored by MyNewsGh, “I believe the president has thought through the ORAL project and the Ghanaians have embraced it.
However, we must not allow personal interests to undermine its purpose. The damage done is not in the best interest of the people.”
A traditional leader clarified that the land in question is not state property.
“This land is privately owned,” he stated, referencing a Supreme Court ruling that confirmed its status.
“It was initially acquired by the colonial government in 1944 for the expansion of the airfield. After independence, it became the property of the Ghanaian government.
After years of petitions, we went to court and successfully reclaimed it in 2017. The Appeals Court confirmed this in 2019, and the Supreme Court affirmed it as well.”
The community is now calling for the land to be cleared. Meanwhile, East Legon Assembly member, Benjamin N, confirmed that the assembly played a role in leasing the land to a private developer. “The assembly has issued the necessary permit for this project,” he said.
The incident has been reported to the police, and both the developer and the traditional authority are urging the president to intervene and ensure justice is served.
