Eugene Antwi blames Mike Ocquaye for NPP’s historic electoral defeat

Former Member of Parliament for the Subin constituency in the Ashanti Region, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has voiced his disapproval of the committees established by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to investigate its historic defeat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 elections.

Speaking during an interview on Asempa FM monitored by MyNewsGh, Antwi did not hold back in criticizing the party’s approach to addressing the loss.

When asked about the committee headed by Mike Ocquaye, tasked with delivering its findings in three weeks, Antwi confirmed his awareness of its mandate but questioned its efficacy. “We all know why the NPP lost,” he said.

“These reasons have been discussed on numerous party platforms already. I don’t understand why we need a committee to tell us what we already know.”

Antwi’s main concern centered around the appointment of Mike Ocquaye as the committee’s leader. “How do you ask the very person who played a significant role in the defeat to investigate what went wrong?” he asked.

He highlighted Ocquaye’s position as chairman of the election committee for both the presidential and parliamentary elections leading up to the vote, arguing that his leadership was part of the problem.

The former MP noted the election results reflected the party’s worst performance in Ghana’s electoral history, with the loss of significant parliamentary seats.

He pointed to internal party divisions, where discontent led some members to run as independents, further diminishing the NPP’s chances. “These independent candidates didn’t just cost us seats—they revealed a party in disarray. We can’t overlook that,” Antwi stated.
