The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, has expressed worry about life after Parliament for most Members of Parliament.
He says they live in penury because they commit their resources to getting the nod to represent their people in Parliament.
Alban Bagbin noted that while in office, most Members of Parliament are trapped by the fact that they have access to cars, however, after leaving office, they cannot even afford bicycles; a worrying situation that needs to be handled.
To him, he has received calls on this and will ensure that things are put in place for a better life for former parliamentarians.
“Now people are looking back and seeing former MPs are all in penury, and so when you are in office and have the trappings of the office, see whether they can even ride a bicycles after leaving Parliament. People have spoken to me about it and we need to do something about it as a country; that is part of resetting Ghana,” he said at a Thanksgiving event at his residence.
To him, he was given a second term as speaker to be able to put things in place to ensure that former Parliamentarians don’t end up in penury.
