Hajia Humu Awudu claims edge over incumbent MP in Wa Central

Hajia Humu Awudu, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Wa Central Constituency in the Upper West Region, has asserted that she is “one step ahead” of the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo.

Speaking to teachers and residents after donating furniture to Kpongu Junior High School, Awudu highlighted her contributions to the constituency as evidence of her commitment to leadership.

“I have never been an MP, and I do not receive the common fund. The government gives your taxes to him,” she declared, positioning herself as a viable alternative to Pelpuo, whom she accused of misusing public funds to favour party supporters rather than addressing community needs.

Hajia Humu emphasised the importance of focusing on development and transparency rather than partisan politics.

“Politics is no longer about who can insult the other. It’s about what you have done and what you will do when you win power,” she asserted, calling for a shift towards positive dialogue and community improvement.

The furniture donation, she stressed, came from her own resources rather than government support.

“As teachers, you understand what development means,” she said. “What I brought to you today is not from the government,” underlining her dedication to community welfare.

She also addressed the impact of role models on youth, warning that children exposed to negative influences are likely to mimic such behaviours.

“If children grow up in a society filled with drunkards, tramadol addicts, and other societal misfits, they are likely to imitate those behaviours because charity begins at home,” she explained.

“On the other hand, if they grow up in a society with doctors, engineers, teachers, immigration officers, and other professionals, they will see them as role models.”

Pledging to prioritise the community’s well-being, Hajia Humu stated, “If I win, it will not be to your detriment. I seek victory to support you and ensure the children are well cared for.”

She urged constituents to look beyond partisan loyalty and elect leaders committed to genuine development.

Reflecting on her political journey, Hajia Humu shared that her loss in the 2020 elections only strengthened her resolve.

“If we hand the seat to someone who has not earned it, they won’t appreciate it. But if the person has worked hard, like how I lost the 2020 election but never gave up, they will value the victory,” she remarked.

She also called for a separation of politics from religion and chieftaincy issues, emphasising the need to focus on pressing community matters. “This election is not about religion or chieftaincy matters; it is about developing the constituency,” she asserted.

In her criticism of the incumbent MP, she reiterated, If you watch social media, you’ll sometimes see him handing out envelopes. But what he should have done was engage in dialogue with you to understand your challenges.”

Hajia Humu concluded her address by promising to engage with constituents to identify and tackle their concerns. “If you vote for me, I will hold discussions with you to identify and address the issues confronting you,” she affirmed.
