Ghana’s overcrowded prison system has long been a cause for concern, with reports highlighting inhumane conditions and inadequate resources for inmates.

In a bid to confront this persistent challenge, Muntaka Mubarak, the Minister-Designate for the Interior, proposed a forward-thinking solution during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

“We need to also be exploring public-private partnerships. I know that most prisons in America are private.

“People build a prison, and the government rents it as a way of decongesting while ensuring all security concerns are addressed and maintaining the national security strategy.

“They build it to meet the required standards, and then the government rents,” Mubarak explained, outlining an approach that combines efficiency with sustainability during his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee today, January 24, 2025.

This recommendation comes at a time when Ghana’s prison facilities face overwhelming congestion, often housing inmates far beyond their intended capacity.
