We have not decided to sell ECG – John Jinapor

The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has sought to clarify the government’s position on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), dispelling fears of an outright sale of the state-owned power distribution company.

Speaking during the inauguration of a seven-member technical committee tasked with restructuring the company, the minister emphasized the importance of stakeholder consultation and local participation in any proposed changes.

“Let me assure the nation that, we have not decided to sell ECG,” he stated, addressing public concerns about the potential privatization of the company.

“Ours is to ensure that we get the private sector involved, and we also want to emphasize local participation.”

Ghana’s energy sector has long faced challenges, from high operational costs to mounting debts, leading to inefficiencies in power distribution.

Over the years, various governments have grappled with finding sustainable solutions to stabilize the sector and enhance its performance.

Jinapor highlighted the urgency of the situation, warning of dire consequences if decisive action is not taken.

“The energy sector is bleeding, and if nothing is done in the shortest possible time, the sector will collapse,” he cautioned.

The committee, comprised of industry experts, is expected to deliver a detailed plan within one month, providing a roadmap for the restructuring process.

Jinapor stressed that the approach would prioritize transparency and inclusivity.

“We want this to be done in a transparent, effective, and responsible way,” he said. “The committee is supposed to consult all stakeholders, including the workers, staff, unions, consumers, and those who matter.”
