PUWU vows to resist ECG privatization plans

The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has voiced strong opposition to the government’s intention to involve the private sector in managing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

This development follows reports that the government has set up a committee under the Minister of Energy to pursue the privatization agenda.

In a statement signed by Timothy Nyame, General Secretary of PUWU, the union reaffirmed its commitment to resist any attempts to privatize the ECG.

The statement, dated January 24, 2025, emphasized that PUWU had not been consulted as a key stakeholder in the process and urged its members to remain calm but vigilant.

“We would like to assure our members of our resolve to resist any attempt by the government to privatize ECG. Members are kindly requested to remain calm while we take appropriate steps towards achieving our goal,” the statement read.

The union also called on its members and the general public to stay on standby for further directives as it strategizes to oppose the move.

PUWU had previously expressed its discontent with such plans, citing concerns over potential job losses, reduced access to affordable electricity, and the impact on workers’ welfare.
