Kwame Agbodza describes road toll cancellation by Akufo-Addo as illegal

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Minister-Designate for Roads and Highways, has strongly criticised the previous government’s decision to abolish road tolls, labelling it an “illegal act.”

During his vetting in Parliament on Monday, January 20, Agbodza outlined the circumstances surrounding the policy change and emphasised its financial impact.

He revealed that members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament had cautioned against the move before it was implemented. Despite their warnings, the then-Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, pushed ahead, disregarding concerns raised by stakeholders and experts.

Agbodza highlighted the significant revenue losses resulting from the abolition of road tolls, noting their importance to the Road Fund. The fund plays a vital role in maintaining and expanding Ghana’s road network.

“It is a matter that has attracted national attention. Accrual to the Road Fund was only GH¢250 million, and we worked to increase it to GH¢1.5 billion. Today, it is over GH¢2 billion, so we cautioned the government against cancelling the road tolls, and we were surprised that they cancelled it. It was an act of illegality to cancel it,” he remarked.

Agbodza also hinted at the reintroduction of road tolls under his leadership, stating it as a necessary measure to bolster revenue collection and sustain road infrastructure development.

The Minister-Designate reiterated that restoring tolls would be integral to ensuring the financial viability of the nation’s road projects.
