The Principal of the St Vincent College of Education in Yendi, Prof. Jonas Kwabla Fiadzawoo, whose appointment sparked controversies resulting in the closure of the college, has tendered his resignation letter to the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
In a letter dated 16 January 2025, and addressed to the Director-General of GTEC, Prof. Fiadzawoo said his decision to resign was due to the controversies surrounding his appointment.
“My vision was to see to the infrastructural development of the college to enhance teaching and learning, which I believe is a priority of all other aspirants.
“However, recent developments concerning the college indicate that my selection does not meet the aspirations of the college,” he said.
He said it was very important for him to respect the views of the community members in the interest of the college.
Prof. Fiadzawoo, who is a Senior Lecturer at the University for Development Studies (UDS), was appointed on November 27, 2024. However, his appointment was greeted with fierce protest from the college community.
Background
On Monday, 13 January, the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II, ordered the closure of the college following a disagreement over the appointment of the new principal for the institution.
The directive was issued after the school’s governing board allegedly ignored the Overlord’s recommendation for the position.
The college’s previous principal retired recently, creating the vacancy.
Following the development, the Overlord is said to have recommended to the board to prioritise suitable candidates who are indigenes to defuse the long-standing impression by many that indigenes are often sidelined by the authorities in recruitment.
However, the board appointed Prof. Jonas Kwabla Fiadzawoo on November 27, 2024, which appeared not to have gone down well with the Overlord and the entire college community.
Currently, all the offices have been locked up and the staff and management have been asked to vacate the premises until the issue is resolved.
Agreement
The Registrar of the Dagbon Traditional Council, Alhassan Abdul-Fataw, told the Daily Graphic that despite being invited to the palace and agreeing to consider the King’s request to prioritise suitable candidates who were indigenes, the board failed to honour their pledge.
“Since the establishment of the college, no Dagomba or indigene has been appointed as principal. The King only became aware of the vacancy when interviews were already underway.
“The King’s appeal to address the impression that local candidates were marginalised was disregarded by the board,” he explained.
