Minority threatens to pull corporation over chaos in Ablekuma North election collation

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has delivered a stern warning to the government, vowing to withdraw cooperation unless robust security measures are implemented to facilitate the collation of results from the Ablekuma North parliamentary election.

In a press briefing on Monday (20 January), Jerry Ahmed Shiab, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Weija-Gbawe, stated:

“The Electoral Commission (EC) needs to recollate the outstanding polling stations, but this requires a secure environment.”

Shiab urged President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action against alleged National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters, who have been accused of stoking unrest in the region.

The MP called for an end to the disruptions to allow the EC to complete its work.

The Ablekuma North constituency has been mired in controversy since the EC suspended the collation of election results due to rising tensions.

The commission had previously requested enhanced security, citing property damage and threats to staff from alleged NDC supporters.

As the government faces mounting pressure to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, the situation in Ablekuma North has become a crucial test of its commitment to democratic principles.

With concerns over transparency and fairness hanging in the balance, all eyes remain on the government’s next move in resolving the crisis.
