The youth will revolt if this government fails – Osei Kwame Griffiths

A former Chief Executive Officer of the National Identification Authority (NIA), Osei Kwame Griffiths, has called for unity and a collective sense of purpose among appointees and party members to ensure the success of the current government.

Speaking in an interview with KMJ on Joy Prime monitored by MyNewsGH, Griffiths stressed the importance of managing expectations, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring commitment to national progress.

Reflecting on his experience in the Ashanti Region before and after elections, Griffiths shared an important realization: “When you talk to people, you have women come to you, they sell plantain, and someone says something that makes you understand their expectations.” He emphasized the need to manage voters’ expectations effectively, as it is a critical element in elections and governance.

Griffiths highlighted the enthusiasm of individuals, including teachers and assembly workers, during election campaigns. He pointed out that this enthusiasm often wanes after elections when individuals are not appointed to positions of influence.

“There is only one Finance Minister we can have in Ghana. Those who are not able to be appointed should also remember that the president has a mandate from the people and has to work efficiently,” he said.

He also addressed the dynamics of political appointments, urging appointees to focus on their roles rather than personal ambitions, particularly those harbouring presidential aspirations.

“Those who have presidential ambitions should he take them on? That’s the million-dollar question,” Griffiths remarked, referring to the potential conflict of interest when appointees prioritize their political futures over their current responsibilities.

Griffiths did not shy away from discussing the internal challenges faced by political parties in Ghana. He noted that succession planning has been a recurring issue in the Fourth Republic, leading to discontent and divisions.

He cited past experiences, saying, “We remember our issues during the Rawlings era when people thought some candidates were being imposed on the party. It didn’t go down well.”

Touching on the importance of unity within political parties, Griffiths highlighted how perceptions of division can influence electoral outcomes.

“Politics is a game of perception. How people see you as a unified party matter. Even the perception of breakaways affects your margins,” he explained.
