All Police Officers must wear body cameras on official duties – Muntaka

The Minister-Designate for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has strongly advocated for the mandatory use of body cameras by police officers across Ghana as part of efforts to combat rising concerns over police misconduct, including extortion and brutality.

During his vetting by the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, January 24, Muntaka emphasised that implementing body cameras would bolster accountability and help restore public trust in the Ghana Police Service.

He pointed to the increasing public outcry against police brutality and extortion, acknowledging that such incidents have significantly eroded confidence in the nation’s law enforcement agencies.

To address this, Muntaka proposed a policy mandating that all police officers wear and activate body cameras when performing their duties.

He argued that the introduction of body cameras would provide an unbiased, clear record of interactions between officers and the public, reducing the risk of ambiguity in cases where police conduct is questioned.

“We want to ensure that whenever a police officer steps out to perform their duties, their body camera is on, recording everything. This will help eliminate any doubts or issues, particularly in cases of extortion or brutality,” Muntaka stated.

“The camera will capture every action, ensuring that the officer’s behaviour is accurately recorded and accountable.”
