Hon Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader of Parliament representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has addressed the tension brewing between his party and Cynthia Mamle Morrison, the current Member of Parliament(MP) for Agona West.
Madam Cynthia Morrison, known for her commitment to her constituency, has taken an independent stand in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Her decision to run independently, though surprising, reflects her desire to continue serving her community, even if it means stepping outside party lines.
In an interview on Okay FM mintored by MyNewsGH.com, Afenyo-Markin shared his thoughts on the situation, urging Morrison and party supporters to consider the consequences of actions “taken in the heat of the moment.”
Acknowledging the significance of her work, he expressed that the NPP still recognizes Morrison’s contributions, even as she diverges from the party’s path. “We want this matter to be resolved peacefully,” he remarked, underscoring the party’s respect for Morrison despite their current differences.
Afenyo-Markin also encouraged Morrison to keep the broader picture in mind. “I understand the passion involved, but there are implications,” he cautioned, hinting at the possible impact of her decision on the party’s overall unity and goals.
While speaking candidly, he advised Morrison to be careful with her words in the public arena, urging her to avoid language that could create further division or invite criticism.
“Be mindful of what you say. Our opponents are watching,” he added, alluding to political rivals who might use their internal friction to their advantage.
Through his diplomatic appeal, Afenyo-Markin demonstrated an understanding of the complexities in Morrison’s decision.
He emphasized the importance of addressing the situation discreetly, warning that if handled publicly or emotionally, it might erode the party’s unified front. “We mustn’t risk our strength over a disagreement like this,” he said, advocating for internal resolution rather than escalation. For the NPP, a united front is paramount, and the potential for even minor disputes to escalate is something he urged everyone involved to consider carefully.
