Election 2024: Election Watch Files RTI demanding information on BVRs

Election Watch Ghana has taken a proactive step by filing a Right to Information (RTI) application. The organization, represented by its convener, Jude Balma, is seeking critical information regarding the Biometric Verification Register (BVR) kits to be utilized during the registration process.

The RTI application specifically requests two key pieces of information. Firstly, Election Watch Ghana is seeking the serial numbers of all BVR kits slated for use during the limited registration exercise, scheduled to take place from May 7 to May 27, 2024. Secondly, the organization is requesting details regarding the corresponding registration centers where each BVR kit will be deployed.

In a signed statement, Jude Balma emphasizes the importance of releasing this information to the public. He asserts that transparency and accountability are essential pillars of a democratic electoral process, and providing access to such critical details is crucial for fostering public trust and confidence in the integrity of the electoral system.

The limited voter registration exercise aims to ensure that newly eligible voters, particularly those who have recently turned 18, have the opportunity to be included in the voter register. However, without access to information about the BVR kits and their deployment locations, there may be concerns regarding the fairness and transparency of the registration process.

Election Watch Ghana acknowledges that the electoral authorities may have reservations about disclosing this information. Nevertheless, the organization remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability, even if it means bearing associated costs or facilitating communication channels for a smoother process.
