NPP raises concerns over electoral irregularities amid low voter turnout

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over alleged electoral malpractice and urged heightened vigilance as Ghana’s voting process moves into its critical final minutes.

Speaking as part of the party’s updates on the polls, the NPP’s General Secretary and Director of Operations for the 2024 campaign, Justin Frimpong Kodua, expressed resentment about reports of tampered ballot papers in parts of the country, including Kintampo South.

While commending party agents for their vigilance so far, Kodua described voter turnout as disappointingly low, estimating participation to be between 50 and 65 percent nationwide.

He encouraged voters who had not yet cast their ballots to make their way to polling stations before the close of polls, reminding them that anyone in line at the official closing time would still have the right to vote.

“Let us ensure that every vote cast is accurately accounted for,” Kodua urged, rallying agents across the country to intensify their efforts as counting begins.

He emphasised the importance of vigilance at every stage of the process, from polling stations to collation centres, and called on the Electoral Commission to ensure professionalism in handling ballots to avoid deliberate invalidation.

The NPP further accused political opponents of attempting to incite chaos in the party’s strongholds, claiming these disruptions were deliberate efforts to interfere with the electoral process.

Kodua called on the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and other security agencies to secure polling centres and protect the integrity of the election.

Despite these challenges, Kodua expressed optimism about the party’s chances, projecting a clear victory for its presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia.

“The votes in the ballot boxes will show that Dr. Bawumia is the winner of this election,” he said.

The party’s call for vigilance and allegations of malpractice underscore the critical nature of the final stages of the election process.

As counting begins, the spotlight remains on the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and political actors to uphold transparency and maintain order.
