Chaos in parliament: We must stay resolute in service to Ghana – Bernard Ahiafor

Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, has described the past week in Parliament as both “demanding and inspiring,” emphasizing the critical role of legislative debates in shaping the country’s governance.

In a social media post sighted by MyNewsGh, Honourable Ahiafor, who also happens to be a Member of Parliament representing the Akatsi South constituency and also serves as First Deputy Speaker, reaffirmed his commitment to upholding democracy and ensuring fair parliamentary proceedings.

“As First Deputy Speaker, I remain committed to fostering constructive discourse, ensuring fair proceedings, and advocating for the best interests of our nation,” he stated.

Acknowledging the challenges facing the legislative body, he stressed the need for resilience and collaboration among stakeholders.

“While challenges persist, our collective resolve to strengthen institutions, enhance policy implementation, and address pressing national concerns remains firm,” he noted.

Looking ahead, Ahiafor expressed optimism about continued progress through unity and dedication, urging all public servants to stay committed to national development.

“Let us remain steadfast in our service to the nation,” he concluded.

Background;

There was clash between the Minority and Majority caucuses. during the recent vettings resulting in property damage within the parliamentary chamber.

The conflict arose when the Majority sought to extend the vetting session beyond 10 PM, a move the Minority opposed, insisting that the day’s proceedings should conclude as scheduled.

This disagreement escalated, with members from both sides engaging in verbal exchanges that devolved into physical confrontations. Reports indicate that tables were overturned and microphones were damaged during the melee

In response to the chaos, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin took decisive action by suspending four Members of Parliament implicated in the disturbances.

The suspended MPs include Mr. Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, Majority Chief Whip Mr. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Minority Chief Whip Mr. Jerry Shaibu, and Mr. Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli.
