Hajia Samira Bawumia, Ghana’s Second Lady, has boldly resisted what she describes as tribal tactics employed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), asserting her rightful place in Ghana’s political space as a Fulani woman.
Speaking passionately to a gathering just days before the much-anticipated December election, Samira called on Ghanaians to reject the NDC’s divisive strategies and rally behind her husband, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Samira’s comments come amid rising tensions in the political landscape, with accusations of tribalism casting a shadow over what many hoped would be issue-based campaigns.
“If the NDC believes that resorting to tribal politics is the way to win the hearts of Ghanaians, then they have no business holding power,” she declared, her voice firm and resonant. “I am a Fulani woman, and I have every right to be here. Ghana is my home just as much as it is theirs.”
The Second Lady expressed disappointment at the focus on her ethnicity rather than her contributions and the qualifications that position her to support her husband’s vision for Ghana.
“Instead of questioning my ability to contribute meaningfully, they attack my character. Why not talk about my credibility or my work?” she questioned, drawing applause from the audience.
Samira Bawumia has become a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics, known for her eloquence and poise.
Over the years, she has championed numerous initiatives, particularly in education and women’s empowerment, earning her widespread respect across the country. Her remarks are seen as not just a defence of her role but a broader call for unity in the face of divisive rhetoric.
Her address also carried a direct appeal to voters, urging them to look beyond political gimmicks and focus on what truly matters for Ghana’s progress.
“This election is not about where you come from or who your ancestors are,” she said. “It’s about competence, vision, and the future we want for our children.
“My husband, Dr. Bawumia, has shown that he is ready to lead this country with integrity and purpose. Let’s not allow anyone to distract us with tribalism.”
