Member of Parliament(MP) for Ablekuma West, Hon Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has thrown her weight behind former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s presidential campaign.

Speaking during an interview on Oyerepa TV, Madam Ursula Owusu passionately defended Kufuor’s decision, even as it raised eyebrows among some party faithful who view Alan Kyerematen as Kufuor’s long-time protégé.

Addressing the significance of the endorsement, Ursula remarked, “President Kufuor’s support for Dr Bawumia is not about favouritism; it’s about capability and vision. Bawumia has demonstrated, time and again, that he understands what it takes to propel Ghana forward, particularly in this digital age.”

Owusu highlighted Bawumia’s achievements in modernizing Ghana’s economy through digital initiatives, from mobile money interoperability to digitized government services, as evidence of his readiness to lead.

She described these efforts as “game-changing policies” that have laid the foundation for a future-ready Ghana. “If we are serious about building a 21st-century economy,” she said, “then we need a leader like Dr. Bawumia, who has already shown us the way.”

While some have questioned the political implications of Kufuor’s decision, particularly its impact on Alan Kyerematen’s bid for leadership within the NPP, Ursula was quick to dispel any notions of betrayal.

“This is not about personal loyalties or past relationships,” she argued. “Kufuor’s endorsement reflects his deep understanding of what Ghana needs at this critical juncture. Bawumia represents a forward-thinking approach that Alan has not convincingly articulated.”

The lawmaker also underscored the symbolic importance of Kufuor’s endorsement, noting that it is rare for a former president to take such a public stance during a party’s internal contest.

“Kufuor isn’t someone who speaks lightly,” she said. “If he’s gone out of his way to publicly back Dr. Bawumia, it’s because he sees what we all see—a leader ready to take Ghana to the next level.”
