Frederick Lartey Otu, President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF), has been elected as a council member of the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union (CTU) during the World Taekwondo General Assembly held in Chuncheon-si, South Korea, on 1 October.
The CTU is focused on advocating for the inclusion of taekwondo in future Commonwealth Games, an event from which the sport has historically been absent.
With his extensive experience in various roles within both World Taekwondo and the African Taekwondo Union, Otu’s election is viewed as a significant step towards realising this goal.
Otu is not the only African representative in the CTU, as Suleiman Sumba, President of the Kenyan Taekwondo Federation (KTF), was also elected as the vice-president.
The inclusion of these leaders from Africa reflects the continent’s growing influence in the sport and its potential to shape the future of taekwondo on the Commonwealth stage.
This development emphasises a renewed commitment to expanding taekwondo’s reach and popularity within the Commonwealth as the union seeks to leverage Otu’s expertise to achieve its aspirations.
