President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has assured the people of Ghana to fulfil his promise of revoking all leases issued by the previous government for mining in forest reserves.
Apart from that, the government will also ban the issuance of mining leases in all forest reserves.
This was made known while swearing in some of his ministers at the Presidency on January 30, 2025.
The President denied claims that some elements in his government have given a group of three the authority to mine in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve.
“The government will ban the issuance of mining leases in all forest reserves and promptly revoke all leases issued under the previous government. The government has not given any person or group of persons authority to mine in these reserves,” the president said.
He ordered the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, the Interior Minister and The Attorney General to work together to ensure that immediate steps are taken to arrest and prosecute persons found mining in the forest.
