There is no Majority in Parliament – Nana Yaa Jantuah

A former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah still holds the view that there is no Majority in Parliament.

During a panel discussion on TV3’s NewDay, Nana Yaa Jantuah stated that the Constitution has been overly abused to the extent that the same constitution looks tired.

Nana Yaa chastised the NPP caucus for calling for a sitting but walked out on November 7, 2024 resulting in the speaker suspending sitting indefinitely.

According to her, although the Supreme Court has ruled in favour of the NPP, there is no majority in parliament.

“This parliament has no majority. It is 137/137 plus 1. There is a government side and an opposition side. From the early beginning, it was an error for the Supreme Court to allow the Independent candidate to sit in their various parities”, Nana Yaa emphasized.

A few days ago, the Supreme Court ruled that the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant by the Speaker of Parliament was unconstitutional.

The court by a 5-2 majority affirmed the application by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader of Parliament.

Two of the judges raised issues about the jurisdiction of the case.

Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo -Markin had filed a suit challenging the Speaker of Parliament’s decision to declare four seats in Parliament vacant has succeeded.

The effect of the court’s decision means that the ruling by the Speaker declaring the four seats vacant was unconstitutional and therefore the four MPs have by law not vacated their seats.
