Ghana to Host 2025 International NORM Symposium

The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), in collaboration with the Ghana Association for Radiation Protection (GARP), the African ALARA Network, and the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA), will host the Eleventh International Symposium on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM XI) in 2025. The symposium, which will be held in association with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), marks the first time the prestigious event will be organized in Sub-Saharan Africa.

NORM XI aims to unite industrial, technical, scientific, and regulatory communities involved in the management of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM). With a focus on harmonizing international approaches to radiation protection for workers, the public, and the environment, the symposium will address critical topics such as residue management in industrial processes involving NORM.

The theme of the symposium is "Broadening Optimization in Industrial Processes Involving NORM: A Focus on Sustainability in Extractive Industries." Participants will engage in discussions on sustainable practices within industries such as water treatment, oil and gas production, and the management of legacy sites. The event will also review progress made since the last symposium, NORM X, which was held in 2022.

In addition to discussions, the symposium will feature presentations, discussion forums, networking opportunities, refresher training courses, and side events by various organizations. Attendees will have access to the latest scientific research, guidance on the application of a graded approach, insights into the use of NORM residues, and strategies for optimizing radiation protection and safety.

The event is open to operators of industrial processes involving NORM, technical service providers, radiation protection professionals, researchers, and regulators, offering them a platform to exchange knowledge and explore innovative solutions in the field of NORM management.

This landmark event is expected to highlight Ghana’s growing role in the international radiation protection landscape and provide a significant opportunity for local and regional industries to align with global best practices.
