Vetting nominees for 10 hours is problematic – Kwesi Pratt

Veteran journalist and political analyst Kwesi Pratt has expressed deep concerns about the prolonged nature of the vetting process by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, questioning its efficiency and the costs associated with it.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana monitored by MyNewsGH, Pratt noted that the vetting sessions, which are broadcast live on multiple television networks, come at a financial cost to the state and its citizens.

“Members of the Appointments Committee need to understand very clearly that their work comes at a cost to the state and the people. If you calculate how much advertisements cost per minute and multiply that by the hours spent, you realize how much money we are losing,” he argued.

Beyond financial costs, Pratt also pointed out the economic and social implications of the drawn-out process.

“Think about the time people spend watching these proceedings instead of working. That also has a cost, not just in monetary terms but in social loss and gain,” he added.

He was particularly critical of instances where nominees are subjected to lengthy questioning, only for both sides of the committee to eventually agree on their approval.

“Vetting people for 10 hours, and in the end, both sides agree there is nothing wrong with the person? It’s problematic. Really, really problematic,” he stressed.
