Financial support in relationships should be out of love, not expectation – Rev. Nanayaa Prempeh

Rev. Dr. Nanayaa Prempeh, alongside Apostle Emmanuel Inkoom, delved into the topic of managing financial responsibilities within relationships, particularly between married couples, in a discussion on Prime Morning monitored by MyNewsGh.

Rev. Dr. Prempeh shared her thoughts on how financial dynamics play a crucial role in defining relationships and how the approach to handling finances can reflect deeper issues in society.

According to Rev. Dr. Prempeh, she doesn’t condone women who are always asking their partners for money, emphasizing the importance of economic empowerment for women.

She clarified that while it’s vital for women to be financially independent, there are situations where financial support may come naturally in a relationship, such as when a woman runs out of credit during a phone conversation. She stated that in such cases, the man should offer to send credit without being asked.

She stressed, however, that it’s not appropriate for women to start asking for financial support right when a relationship begins.

“The man does not need to come into your life immediately to be taken responsibility for. It is only after you are married that you become his responsibility and he becomes your responsibility,” she asserted. Rev. Dr. Prempeh believes that the foundation of a relationship should not be built on immediate financial expectations but on genuine connection and mutual respect.

She also spoke about women who take on financial responsibilities for men they love, which has sometimes been viewed negatively by society.

“Society makes that look like the woman is being foolish, excuse my language,” she said. But she also acknowledged that, in some cases, the woman’s decision to help her partner financially may not always be reciprocated.

Despite the societal judgments, she argued that love is a two-way street, and it is not wrong for a woman to support a man, as long as it is done out of love.

Rev. Dr. Prempeh also touched on the challenges women face in these situations, where they may financially support their partners, only for the man to disappoint them.

She narrated examples where women sponsor men through their education, only for the man to later betray the relationship.

“Sometimes the men, I don’t know if the zip, we have to put a padlock there,” she remarked humorously, adding that such behavior could sometimes leave women feeling disillusioned.
