Thirty-five people have died in road accidents between January and June this year in the Upper East Region, the same number as recorded for the same period in 2023.
However, there has been a 33.72% reduction in injuries and a 41.81% reduction in road crashes during this period.
John Quarshie, the Upper East regional PRO for the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) mentioned this when he spoke to Asaase News.
According to the National Road Safety Authority in the Upper East Region between January and June 2024, 57 injuries were recorded, compared to 86 injuries last year.
Road crashes also decreased from 85 in 2023 to 50 during the same period this year. John Quarshie attributed the reduction to residents’ adherence to road safety regulations.
“This shows that the public is adhering to what we ask them to do. Road safety is a shared responsibility. If we do our part and the public doesn’t do its part, we will not reach our goals,” he said.
To further decentralise road safety education, Quarshie revealed that the district road safety committees will be formed and inaugurated in all 15 districts and municipalities in the region. Currently, 11 committees have been formed, with nine already inaugurated and operational. The committee members will be trained and certified to work in conjunction with the various assemblies.
“We want to implement road safety from the grassroots. We don’t want to approach it from the top down,” Quarshie said.
Meanwhile, the National Road Safety Authority is expected to engage political actors in the Upper East Region as campaigns intensify.
According to Quarshie, this initiative aims to address the increase in road crashes typically observed during electioneering periods.
“During most election periods, our cases go up. There is a plan to meet all political leaders. This has been done at the national level, so we aim to do the same here. We want to see how we can train dispatch riders and caution them as they embark on campaigns and other activities,” he said.
