ATU Receives grant: Accra Technical University has been given US$160,000 to expand its innovative projects across various departments.
The grant, through the collaboration of international development partners and local stakeholders, will further improve the vision and mission statement of the university in promoting technical education, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Ghana.
It aims to enhance numerous already-running initiatives, such as cutting-edge research in renewable energy, technology, and manufacturing, and also those aimed at enabling students to find solutions for real-life tangible challenges. The grant is likely to remarkably enhance the capacity of the University in preparing students for entrance into an ever-competitive global job market.
Promoting innovation and entrepreneurship
For over a decade, ATU has been one of the leading technical and vocational universities in Ghana, committed to grooming its students into innovative talents. Its prominence in practical education and applied research has at the moment positioned it as a linchpin in Ghana’s resolve to meet some of the critical development challenges.
With this newly secured grant, ATU plans to scale up some of the most promising projects in the works. These include innovations in renewable energy solutions that offer sustainable alternatives to traditional energy sources and advancements in digital technology that could potentially drive the future of the country’s tech industry.
The grant will also go to the manufacturing sector: “the university is working on producing products in Ghana that have passed international standards. This falls in line with Ghana’s bigger vision of industrialization and reduction of reliance on imports .
Supporting student startups
Besides research and development, some of the grants will be channeled into student-led startups. These are to be nurtured into businesses born from ATU’s entrepreneurship programs, which are designed to spur students into turning their ideas into commercially viable businesses. Funding shall be channeled into providing mentorship, seed capital, and other means necessary toward taking such ideas to market.
According to the Vice-Chancellor of Accra Technical University, Prof. Amevi Acakpovi, his outfit was excited about the grant because it would be important to change the educational landscape and drive innovations in Ghana.
“This grant will give substantial impetus to progress we have made in the last couple of years. This is not just about education; this is also about creating leadership for different industries. We are working to scale up these projects to produce a graduate that can bring about change and innovation, who is technologically smart,” Prof. Amevi said.

This grant represents a very strong partnership between international donors, Ghana’s Ministry of Education, and industry stakeholders, with each player having an interest in the strengthening of technical education in Ghana. These partners see ATU as an important institution for developing the human capital needed to sustain the country’s economic growth.
