Disrespectful and arrogant nominees won’t have it easy – Afenyo-Markin warns

The Minority in Parliament has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the behaviour of some ministerial nominees appearing before the Appointments Committee, accusing them of arrogance, partisanship, and a lack of preparedness.

During a press conference today, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin did not hold back in his criticism, particularly highlighting the brief vetting session of the Health Minister-designate.

“This morning, the nominee for the Ministry of Health spent only a short time before the committee,” he stated.

“The nominees themselves should know that they are now coming into public office. Their conduct, their humility, and their attitude will help matters.”

Afenyo-Markin warned that those who display arrogance, dishonesty, or disrespect would not be granted an easy passage.

“If you have a nominee who is so arrogant, so partisan, so disrespectful, so deceptive, and so dishonest, you don’t expect us to spend time on them,” he asserted.

“Those who come well-prepared, know their brief, and show respect will be reciprocated in kind. But those who insult and abuse the Chief Justice and a former president should not expect us to clap for them and take tea with them. We will not.”

The Minority Leader also issued a caution to the Chair of the Appointments Committee, urging him not to succumb to pressure from certain elements within the Majority side.

“I am therefore cautioning the Chair of the Committee not to yield to those extremists who are pushing him to assert his authority because they think he is weak,” he said. “He should know that we respect him.”
