In a groundbreaking step towards enhancing Ghana’s digital infrastructure and border security, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, on Tuesday (3 December), commissioned the Electronic Gate (E-GATE) system at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
The state-of-the-art system is designed to streamline passenger clearance, reduce waiting times, and strengthen border security.
Speaking at the event, Bawumia described the initiative as a significant milestone in Ghana’s digital transformation journey.
He highlighted the country’s commitment to homegrown solutions, emphasising the role of the Ghana card and other digital innovations in reshaping service delivery across sectors.
“Built by Ghanaians for Ghanaians, the E-GATE system showcases the strength of local expertise,” he said.
“It integrates advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and real-time data processing, positioning Ghana as a global pioneer in intelligent border control.”
The Vice President also noted that the E-GATE system aligns Ghana with global advancements in border management.
“This system leverages biometric verification and digital travel credentials to ensure a seamless and secure travel experience,” he explained.
“Travellers can now bypass traditional queues, completing clearance in as little as 15 minutes.”
The E-GATE system, which operates both online and offline, cross-references biometric data against national and international databases, enhancing security and reducing the risk of fraud or unauthorised entry.
Bawumia affirmed that it will be replicated at major airports, land borders, and seaports across the country, ensuring consistent standards nationwide.
Interior Minister Henry Quartey lauded the project, describing it as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to innovation and security.
“The E-GATE system is more than a technological upgrade; it’s a step forward in creating safer, smarter, and more efficient border controls,” he stated.
He emphasised the system’s ability to track and manage individuals of security concern, ensuring that undesired elements are prevented from entering the country.
He also commended the collaboration between the Ghana Immigration Service and Margins Group for delivering a project of global standards.
Bawumia revealed that the system builds on the success of the Ghana card, recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) as a valid e-passport.
He noted that Ghanaians can now travel from 44,000 airports worldwide using the card.
“By integrating cutting-edge technologies, Ghana has achieved unprecedented levels of security and visibility.”
“This initiative safeguards our borders and reinforces Ghana’s position as a leader in global travel infrastructure,” he concluded.
The E-GATE system is expected to enhance travel experiences for Ghanaians, members of the diaspora, and foreign visitors.
Its introduction marks a significant step towards Ghana’s digital revolution, reflecting the nation’s ability to lead in innovation and modern border management.
The event was attended by key stakeholders, including the Ghana Immigration Service, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Transport, and the Margins Group, whose collaboration ensured the project’s success.
Ghana now stands ready to embrace the future of border management, setting a benchmark for modern travel infrastructure in the region and beyond.
