The Electoral Commission (EC) has conducted the balloting for the 13 presidential candidates contesting in the 7 December elections, determining the order in which they will appear on the ballot paper.
The event, held on Friday (20 September), at the EC headquarters in Accra, also addressed the issue of the 11 disqualified presidential aspirants.
According to the EC, these candidates were given opportunities to correct errors in their submissions but failed to do so.
The balloting process involved two rounds. In the first, representatives of the nine participating political parties picked the order in which they would choose their position on the ballot.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) secured the first chance to select, with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) landing seventh.
However, the proceedings were momentarily interrupted when Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, representing the NDC, raised concerns over one of the balls used for the draw, claiming it differed from the others.
After discussions, including suggestions to use opaque bags to obscure the numbers on the balls, the EC accepted the proposed changes and resumed the process.
In the second round, the NPP’s fortune saw them claim the top spot on the ballot. The Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) followed in second place, with Akua Donkor’s Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) in third.
The rest of the lineup saw the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) in fourth, the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) in fifth, the National Democratic Party (NDP) in sixth, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) in seventh, and the NDC taking eighth place. The All People’s Congress (APC) was placed ninth.
Among the independent candidates, Kofi Koranteng will occupy the 10th position, George Twum-Barima-Adu 11th, Nana Kwame Bediako (popularly known as “Cheddar”) 12th, and Alan John Kyerematen 13th.
