Spain etched their names in European Championship history on Sunday (14 July), securing a record-breaking fourth title with a thrilling 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final at Berlin’s Olympiastadion.
The young guns of La Roja stole the show. Nico Williams, a breakout star of the tournament, opened the scoring early in the second half, finishing smartly after a perfectly weighted pass from another rising talent, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal.
England fought back tenaciously. Cole Palmer unleashed a stunning left-footed strike from distance to level the score midway through the second period, sending a wave of hope through the Three Lions’ faithful.
However, Spanish dominance continued, and their relentless pressure paid dividends late on. Substitute Mikel Oyarzabal turned home a pinpoint cross from Marc Cucurella with just five minutes remaining, sparking jubilant celebrations amongst Spain players and fans.
This victory marks Spain’s fourth European Championship triumph, adding to their titles in 1964, 2008 and 2012. Conversely, England’s wait for a major trophy continues, extending their heartbreak after their penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.
