NHIA launches ambitious free annual health check-up programme in Accra

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has launched a massive free annual health check-up programme in Accra to ensure that every Ghanaian receives at least one annual medical check-up.

The initiative aims to address existing health concerns and proactively identify potential health risks within the Ghanaian public with promptness. Additionally, Ghanaians not yet registered with the NHIS will be captured during their visit to the hospital for their annual check-up.

During the launch, the chief executive officer of NHIA, Aboagye da Costa, revealed that this initiative marks a significant milestone in the Authority’s ongoing effort to enhance the health and wellness of citizens.

“… Let me say the NHIA and partners are delighted to introduce this programme at this time, which embodies our commitment to promoting preventive healthcare and ensuring access to essential health services for all.”

According to him, the free annual health programme is designed with early detection and intervention in mind to prevent serious health conditions.

“Health systems worldwide are increasingly recognising the importance of preventive healthcare measures. Early detection and intervention can prevent serious health conditions, reduce the burden of diseases, and improve quality of life. Our free annual health programme is designed with these goals in mind.”

“By offering free comprehensive screenings annually, we aim to identify potential health issues at an early stage, allowing for timely treatment and management. The first phase of the free animal health programme will provide a range of services, including health screening services, including blood pressure management, blood sugar testing, body masks, e-meds, counselling and referrals where needed.”

The programme is open to all citizens covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme and anyone who possesses a Ghana Card.

He added, “This programme is not just about testing. It’s about educating our population on healthy lifestyles and preventive measures. I urge all citizens to take advantage of this free service during their month of birth.”

This initiative aligns with the broader national healthcare outline in Ghana’s health policy framework.

“We are continuously working to expand our health services, improve health infrastructure, and ensure that every citizen has access to the care they need.”

“The success of the free annual health check program will pave the way for more innovative healthcare initiatives in the future,” da Costa said.
