We must overhaul infrastructure to boost Ghana’s tourism sector— Dzifa Gomashie

The topic of Ghana’s hospitality industry and the need for infrastructural improvement is one concern Concerns have been raised by key stakeholders.

This conversation was reignited by Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts, during her appearance before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on January 22, 2025.

Gomashie’s remarks addressed the pressing issues that are holding back Ghana’s tourism sector, particularly the lack of sufficient infrastructure to cater to growing demands.

“This is an unending discussion, especially where hotel rates are concerned. Even hotels that have franchises in other countries tend to be very high, comparatively,” Gomashie noted, acknowledging the widespread concerns about accommodation costs in the country.

While the high prices are a significant factor, it is the inadequacy of the infrastructure itself that remains a major barrier.

She continued, “I agree with you about the lack of infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the world and our country. It is there, plain as day, right in our faces.”

From a lack of modern hotels to limited transport facilities and inadequate sanitation, the country’s tourism industry is struggling to keep up with the expectations of global travellers.

The honourable incoming minister emphasized that these infrastructure gaps are not just a local concern but a national one that could hinder economic growth.

“I agree with you that the lack of these facilities takes away from what could be revenue for our country,” she said, clearly highlighting the broader impact on Ghana’s economy.
