Gadayi omitted due to revised IOC qualification criteria

Edwin Gadayi, crowned Ghana’s fastest human in June, was a surprise omission from the men’s 4x100m relay team heading to Paris.

The unexpected development stems from a revision of the athletics programme qualification criteria by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Athletics (WA) due to exceeding initial athlete projections.

The revised plan restricts full accreditation for the fifth member of relay teams, classifying them as additional alternates. This change forced Ghana Athletics (GA) to make the difficult decision to leave out the promising 23-year-old sprinter.

Sarkodie and King Promise to headline Ghana Stand

Music fans attending the Paris Olympics can expect a vibrant atmosphere in the Ghana Stand, with confirmation that popular Ghanaian artists Sarkodie and King Promise will be performing.

The news was revealed by French embassy cooperation attaché Marine Hayem during a press briefing organised by the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to update media on Team Ghana’s preparations.

Sarkodie, real name Michael Owusu Addo, and King Promise, real name Gregory Bortey Newman, will join other prominent Ghanaian artists to entertain fans throughout the Games.

Ghanaian-Italian tennis star makes Wimbledon history

Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini has made history by becoming the first Italian woman to reach a Wimbledon final. Notably, Paolini’s heritage extends beyond Italy; her mother is of Ghanaian descent.

The 27-year-old, who had never previously won a match at the All-England Club, reached the final after a dramatic three-set victory over Croatia’s Donna Vekic. Paolini now seeks to become the first Italian woman to lift the prestigious Wimbledon trophy.

Maud Benson earns chess title

Ghanaian chess continues to develop talent, with 23-year-old Maud Benson achieving the Woman Candidate Master (WCM) title.

This is a significant accomplishment, making Benson only the third Ghanaian woman to earn a chess title, joining WCM Tobi Felix and Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Angela Ayiku.

Benson’s impressive showing at the 2023 West African Chess Championship Zone 4.2 tournament was instrumental in securing her title. She secured gold with an unbeaten record at the competition held in Côte d’Ivoire.

Spain clinches fourth European Championship title

Spain’s national football team secured a record-breaking fourth European Championship title on Sunday (14 July), defeating England 2-1 in a thrilling final.

Young stars Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal played key roles for La Roja, while Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal sealed the victory in Berlin.
