The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that any votes cast for the late Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) candidate, Akua Donkor, in the upcoming December elections will be annulled.
Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman of the EC for Corporate Services, confirmed this during a Saturday (16 November), appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile.
“Now we know we have 12 candidates, so any vote for Akua Donkor would be annulled. It is not possible for her to win,” Dr. Asare stated.
He further explained that the EC is actively working to inform the public in order to prevent invalid votes.
This announcement follows the disqualification of another GFP candidate, Philip Appiah Kubi, which left the late Akua Donkor’s name on the ballot for procedural reasons.
EC Chairperson Jean Mensa had previously stated on 12 November during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting that the ballot structure would remain unchanged to avoid delays, as the printing of the ballots was already 90% complete.
