Afenyo-Markin admits political class’ shortcomings in articulating governance strategy

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Channel One TV monitored by MyNewsGh.com, Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin delved into the ongoing discussions surrounding the number of ministers in the current government.

Addressing concerns raised by civil society organizations about the excessiveness of having numerous ministers, Afenyo-Markin provided his perspective on the matter.

“Look, if a civil society organization comes forward and says, ‘having three ministers for this sector is too much,’ your job as a leader is to engage,” he said. “You need to present your justifications for why three ministers are necessary or provide reasons why it is crucial to have that number.”

He continued, pointing out that the discourse surrounding ministerial appointments wasn’t merely a matter of political opinion.

“Even the candidate of my party, who is not the president, supported and promised 50 ministers,” Afenyo-Markin noted.

“So obviously, there was some thought put into this. I’m just saying that there are reasons for these decisions, and it’s important that we have that conversation.”

While addressing criticisms of the current political class, Afenyo-Markin humbly admitted that they had not navigated the narrative around governance and the country’s ministerial structure properly.

“I humbly submit that we, as a political class, haven’t properly articulated our views, the challenges we face, and how we want to shape the national agenda,” he said.

The Minority Leader acknowledged that politicians often dominate the media space, yet they haven’t done enough to effectively communicate their positions.

“Politicians have all the airtime. We talk more than anyone else,” he remarked, emphasizing that this gives them a responsibility to better explain their actions and decisions.

He further admitted that it was a shortcoming on their part not to have adequately explained the reasoning behind the decisions made. “I admit that we haven’t explained it well,” he stated. “But don’t forget, my own party also promised 50 ministers.”
