NDC Calls for Electoral Integrity Ahead of 2024 Elections
Prof. Richard Kofi Asiedu, Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa and her Deputy, Dr. Bossman Asare, to ensure a fair and transparent electoral process for the upcoming December 7, 2024 general elections. His comments come amid concerns over illegal voter transfers and discrepancies in the Voters’ Register.
During a recent “Enough is Enough” demonstration organized by the NDC, Prof. Asiedu voiced strong criticism of the EC, urging the commission to address the issues raised by the party to ensure that all Ghanaians can participate in a smooth and unbiased electoral process. He emphasized the importance of allowing Ghanaians to choose their leaders without interference or manipulation.
“Ghanaians are ready to vote their minds out, so the EC cannot force them to vote according to what you want,” Prof. Asiedu said. “Let Ghanaians elect their own leaders because if this type of illegal electoral process is allowed, anybody can vote and elect the wrong leaders for this nation.”
The NDC has expressed concern over reports of illegal voter transfers, missing names, and incorrect voter transfers into unknown constituencies, which they believe could compromise the integrity of the Voters’ Register. Prof. Asiedu warned that such issues could undermine the democratic process and the achievements Ghana has made since the return to democracy in 1992.
“The electoral process should be free and fair since the EC cannot decide who should be President in this nation. The voters themselves must have that power,” he added.
The “Enough is Enough” demonstration was a call for greater transparency and accountability in the electoral process, with NDC officials emphasizing that any missteps by the EC could have serious consequences for Ghana’s democracy.
Prof. Asiedu’s remarks reflect growing concerns about the conduct of the electoral commission and its impact on the upcoming elections. The NDC continues to push for reforms and assurances that the electoral process will be conducted with the highest levels of integrity and fairness.
