The North East Regional Minister, Yidana Zakaria, has made a passionate appeal to the youth of Walewale to take an active stand against the growing menace of illicit drug use in the region.
Addressing a maiden homecoming event organised by the Walewale Youth Association (WALYA) on Sunday (29 December), Zakaria called on the young people to unite in identifying and combating drug dealers within their communities.
Zakaria warned that the misuse of drugs not only devastates individuals but also tears families apart and weakens the fabric of society.
“The use of these substances is the greatest threat to the future of human existence. Please engage all who matter in this fight,” he urged, stressing the need for collective action to protect the younger generation from falling victim to drug abuse.
The minister noted that Walewale is gradually transforming into a sprawling city, which brings its own set of challenges.
He commended WALYA for its efforts, stating that the association, even in its early stages, has the potential to partner with state institutions and traditional authorities to tackle these developmental issues effectively.
Drawing inspiration from other communities, Zakaria highlighted the successes achieved by the chiefs and youth of Dagbon and Gambaga in reducing drug abuse.
He encouraged the youth of Walewale to follow their example by working closely with government agencies and traditional leaders to curb the illicit drug trade.
“I want to call on the association and its leadership to support government and our esteemed traditional authorities to fight the cancer of indiscriminate abuse of drugs and hard substances,” he said.
Zakaria also shed light on some of the substances being misused, including tramadol, energy drinks laced with harmful substances, super glue inhaled as a stimulant, and other hazardous drugs.
These substances, he warned, are not only damaging lives but also jeopardising the future of the community.
The minister’s call to action reflects a broader effort to empower the youth of Walewale to become agents of change in their community.
He expressed hope that by addressing the root causes of drug abuse and taking bold steps to stop its spread, Walewale’s youth could help safeguard the region’s future.
