Election 2024: EC declares votes for Akua Donkor as rejected ballots

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that all votes cast for the late Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) presidential candidate, Madam Akua Donkor, in the upcoming 2024 elections will be classified as rejected ballots.

Madam Akua Donkor passed away on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra following a brief illness.

Efforts to replace her on the presidential ballot were unsuccessful after her proposed replacement was disqualified by the EC due to errors and irregularities in the nomination process.

Despite her image and the GFP logo remaining on the ballot paper, the EC clarified that any votes cast in her favour would not be counted as valid.

In a statement issued on Friday (22 November) the EC explained: “In view of the fact that the image and Party logo of the late Madam Akua Donkor remain on the 2024 Presidential Ballot Paper, the Commission has decided that all votes cast in favour of Madam Akua Donkor will be counted as Rejected Ballots.

“Votes cast in favour of Madam Akua Donkor will NOT be added to the Valid Votes Cast. The Commission wishes to inform the General Public accordingly,” it added.

The EC added that election staff and agents representing presidential candidates have been informed of this directive to ensure a smooth process on election day.
