The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has launched its 20th-anniversary celebrations on Thursday (31 October), emphasising two decades of commitment to advancing peace and security across Ghana and the African continent.
This landmark comes at a crucial time, with Ghana’s December elections on the horizon, spotlighting the country’s dedication to democratic stability.
Founded by the Ministry of Defence in 1998 and inaugurated in 2004, KAIPTC has grown into a vital institution for peacekeeping and security training in Africa.
Known for preparing military, police, and civilian personnel to tackle complex security challenges, the centre has trained more than 25,000 individuals, placing it at the forefront of modern peacekeeping efforts.
In remarks delivered on his behalf, Ghana’s Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, emphasised the importance of peace and security amid the nation’s forthcoming elections.
“Ghana boasts a strong record of conducting free and fair elections, which has earned us respect at home and abroad,” he said. “This year’s elections will further solidify Ghana’s standing as a beacon of democracy.”
Lt. Gen. Oppong-Peprah commended KAIPTC for its impact on peace and security in the region, acknowledging its role in training personnel for complex security operations across Africa.
“KAIPTC has developed specialised training programs tailored to the unique demands of peacekeeping missions, which have been pivotal in supporting both regional and global security initiatives,” he noted.
Reflecting on the centre’s journey, Commandant Major General Richard Addo-Gyane highlighted the centre’s evolution from its origins to its present-day status as one of three ECOWAS-mandated peacekeeping training centres.
The Commandant traced its establishment to the need for institutionalised peace training, informed by regional experiences and a commitment to strengthening Africa’s peace and security landscape.
KAIPTC has also expanded its academic reach, offering postgraduate programmes in peace support operations, conflict management, and security studies.
These courses, which include Master’s and PhD-level qualifications, are designed to foster leadership and strategic expertise in peacekeeping, further embedding the centre’s role in bolstering regional stability.
In a significant development, KAIPTC has elevated its Women, Peace, and Security Institute, now transformed into the “Women, Youth, Peace, and Security Department.”
This change reflects the centre’s commitment to integrating gender perspectives and youth participation into its peace and security initiatives, aligning with global calls for inclusive peacebuilding.
As KAIPTC celebrates its 20th year, its contributions to peace in Ghana and across Africa remain a testament to its founding mission, positioning it as a key player in fostering stability and resilience in an increasingly complex security environment.
