People couldn’t take their eyes off it – Uzor Arukwe on his standout Sugar Rush performance

Nigerian actor Uzor Arukwe has shared insightful reflections on his journey in the entertainment industry during an interview with filmmaker and TV host Chude Jideonwo.

While discussing his career highlights, Arukwe attributed his breakthrough to his role in the movie Sugar Rush, where his portrayal of a seemingly comical character left a lasting impression on audiences.

Speaking about the impact of the film, Chude remarked, “You took a character that could be dismissed as a comical character and made it present. People couldn’t take their eyes off it. It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, he’s a funny character,’ and move on, but people were talking about how great an actor you are.”

In response, Arukwe expressed his deep commitment to his craft. “I’m very passionate about this craft, you know.

Anybody who knows me knows that I’ve always been very passionate about it. I take all my work seriously, whether it’s stage or film.”

He recounted how he landed the Sugar Rush role, describing it as an answer to his prayers. “I was scrolling through Instagram late at night and saw Bimbo, Bisola, and Adesua in a movie.

“I didn’t know the name, but I prayed and thought, ‘God, when will I be in films like this?’ The next morning, I saw a missed call, and Truecaller showed it was Jade Osiberu. It turned out to be for the same film. I did a happy dance and thought, ‘Is this how God answers prayers?’”

Although his role in Sugar Rush was limited to a few scenes, Arukwe’s performance earned him significant acclaim.

“One of the biggest moments for me was when a Hollywood actor referenced my performance as one of the best in the film during an event. It was surreal and affirming,” he shared.

Reflecting on his career shift from the corporate world to acting, Arukwe said, “I did corporate work for ten years, but I wasn’t sure if I should hang my corporate boots and fully embrace acting.

“I prayed for a sign, and then Sugar Rush happened. Around the same time, I was nominated for AMVCA twice. That was the confirmation I needed.”
