Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, the Kontihene of Asuom, has called for a more prominent role for traditional leaders in shaping Ghana’s development agenda.
He emphasized the unique position of chiefs in driving long-term progress in their communities during an interview on GHOne TV’s Hard Talk show with Lily Mohammed,
“A president can be in power for a maximum of 8 years. An MP can go more, but do you think somebody whose forefathers have toiled, and shed blood to maintain their town or village and who wants to see that town or village develop has less ambition to develop it than a politician who is there for four years?” he asked.
Nana Obodade III highlighted the enduring responsibility chiefs have to their people, contrasting it with the relatively short tenure of politicians.
He underscored the need to recognize traditional leaders as key instruments of development.
“We should begin to see chiefs as instruments of development because the lands belong to us and we are responsible for how it goes,” he stated, pointing to the pivotal role traditional authorities play in land management and fostering sustainable growth.
