Four “relatives” of “dead paralympic coach” also absconded in Norway, says Samsom Deen

Four “relatives” of the “dead paralympic coach”, Goerge Gyamfi Gyasi, who went to represent the country at the just-ended Norway Marathon have also absconded in Norway, the president of the National Paralympic Committee, Samson Deen has said.

The four are said to have secured visas from the Norwegian embassy with the intention of going to Oslo to bring the corpse of Gyamfi Gyasi to Accra.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (22 July), Deen said the two officials who aided the “fake paralympic team” used a defunct association to apply for the visa.

“If you look at the first application, it was six or seven people they applied for initially. They were denied visas,  they got the letters they wanted subsequently forged, but upon arrival, they absconded, and one died.”

“They subsequently wrote to the Norwegian embassy again and requested to send the families of the one who died The people went, they couldn’t bring the corpse. The four also absconded, these guys are known. They’ve been identified,” Deen said.

Dismissal

Meanwhile, the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) suspended two officials for forging documents to secure visas for some para-athletes to go to Norway.

The NPC, led by Samson Deen, has imposed an indefinite suspension on Theodore Mawuli Viwotor, former general secretary of the Ghana Amputee Football Association, and Yaw Ayisi, founder of the Ernestay Foundation, for their roles in the scandal.

This comes after reports surfaced that 11 para-athletes and officials who went to Norway for a competition in April had failed to register to participate in the event.

According to a letter signed by Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of National Security, a member of Ghana’s paralympic team was apprehended by Norwegian officials as he attempted to flee Norway to Sweden.

“Consequently, the Norwegian embassy in Accra has issued alerts to other Schengen states, Western Diplomatic Missions in Accra and other European Border Coast Guard agencies as part of efforts to apprehend and repatriate the team members,” the letter stated.

The letter also reported that the team’s coach, George Gyamfi Gyasi, died on 17 May 2024, after being admitted to Oslo University Hospital.

A dismissal letter sighted by Asaase Sports said, “The leadership of the NPC Ghana has taken cognizance of your actions and activities, which include unwarranted letters to embassies in Ghana requesting visas for and on behalf of purported para-athletes and officials.

“And also the falsification of the NPC-Ghana letterhead, forging of NPC’s president’s signature and stamp for your illegal operations.”

The NPC is expected to release a statement in the coming days to uncover their findings after a preliminary investigation.
