The Western Regional Coordinating Council (WRCC) has taken decisive action to curb a severe cholera outbreak that has gripped the region, recording alarming numbers of infections and fatalities.
As of 7 December 2024, a total of 789 suspected cases and eight deaths have been reported across various health facilities, with daily cases exceeding 60.
The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan and Effia Kwesimintsim Municipal areas account for 95% of infections.
Investigations conducted by environmental surveillance teams have identified contaminated vegetables sold by food vendors as the primary source of the outbreak, with 96% of infections linked to this cause. Commonly implicated vegetables include salads, leafy greens and green peppers.
Immediate ban
To address the crisis, the WRCC has announced an immediate ban on the sale of vegetables by food vendors in the region, citing the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).
The ban, which is intended to protect public health, will remain in effect until health authorities confirm the safety of these practices. Offenders will face prosecution under the law.
