Parliament: Kwaku Kwarteng to be reassigned to economics committee

The current chairman of the finance committee in Parliament, Kwaku Kwarteng, has been reassigned to the position of chairman of the newly established economics committee.

This was announced in Parliament on Friday (29 June 2024) by the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

He maintained that Parliament needs a spokesman on the economy and said that Kwarteng has been selected to take up the position.

“He’s going to be our spokesperson on the economy. The new economics committee is going to be the most important committee of this House,” Afenyo-Markin said.

“… of some of the proactive steps we are taking on this side of the House to throw a serious challenge that is not just about governance, we have a new economics committee.

”It’s going to be the most important committee in this House,” the Majority Leader again stressed.

Challenge to NDC

“We are challenging you to come up with your [the Minority] spokesperson on the economy. You have not said so officially.

“We are going to make sure we have a spokesperson on the economy to challenge you …

“Kwaku Kwarteng is now going to face you directly on the economy,” Afenyo-Markin repeated. “Not now: I’m just announcing.

“Yes, that is why we are now going to make Kwaku Kwarteng the chair of the economics committee: to face you and be our [the Majority’s] spokesperson.”

The economics committee is being set up by Parliament under the new standing orders of the House, which came into effect on 2 January 2024.
