Election 2024: NPP paid dearly for Akufo-Addo’s perceived arrogance – Ayew Afriyie

Member of Parliament for the Effiduase Asokore constituency in the Ashanti region, Dr Ayew Afriyie has asserted that the perceived arrogance of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo played a major role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) disgraceful loss in the 2024 elections.

He cited the president’s comments in the Ashanti Region, which suggested that if the people of Kwabre in the Ashanti Region want to vote for the NDC, they can do so.

Apart from this, he indicated that the utter disregard for chiefs by the president also played a contributory role in the humiliating defeat of the political party in the 2024 elections.

To him, politics in Ghana is about perception, so as a politician, the president should have restrained himself from some of the things he did during the election year.

However, that wasn’t the case, and the NPP paid dearly during the election.

“If you are going to the elections and the president tells you, ‘Kwabre East, if you will not vote for me, it is your own case.’ If he says this, how do you want the people to feel?” Dr. Afriye stated.

“What the President did was unacceptable. And if you also look at an election year and you tell chiefs to stand up and greet you, the Ghanaian people, they don’t like that. So the President has his then Ken has his. There are other people in the pipe that also have their own shortfalls.

When you say you want to introduce e-levy, the people say they don’t want it but you insist you’ll introduce it. Even in Parliament we said reduce it and explain to the people but you did not agree,” he said on Oyerepa TV in an interview.

To him, the low turnout during the election was a measure of angst, apathy and disappointment on the part of the Ghanaian people indicating that the NPP has learnt bitter lessons and will do better after knowing their smoothness level.
