TikTok Music shutdown: In what seems to come as a shock for many, TikTok Music, a music-streaming service by social media giant TikTok, officially shuts down on November 28th, 2024.
That’s the date when it will formally cease operations, putting an end to a brief but striking incursion into the competitive music streaming world. Now, millions of users are asking themselves questions like what went wrong and how this movement is going to affect their music libraries and subscriptions.
Background: The Rise of TikTok Music
TikTok Music arrived in mid-2023 with the audacious goal of extending the TikTok brand beyond short-form video and leveraging its viral music influence.
By keeping music streaming directly within its social media ecosystem, TikTok aimed to introduce a music world that could stand on par with Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. It made it easy for users to discover, stream, and share the songs that are trending on TikTok-a definite win with the younger audience of the platform.
The app started to gain momentum, especially among Gen Z, attracting millions of subscribers within the first year. It was pretty decently priced, had exclusive releases from artists on TikTok, and deeply integrated well with TikTok’s algorithm, which allows for personalized music recommendations based on a user’s video-watching habits.
The Decision to Shut Down
Despite its early success, the company had many reasons for deciding to shut down TikTok Music. “Strategic realignment” was one of the most significant and main reasons for discontinuing the said services, according to the statement issued by ByteDance, the owner company of TikTok. “While TikTok Music was an innovative platform, we have decided to move resources toward other areas of growth and user engagement,” it said.
According to people close to the industry, it was hard to keep it profitable in a market that was already saturated by well-known streaming services. Of course, competition from other services that have bigger music libraries and extra features might have been one of the barriers that made it hard to grow TikTok Music in the long run. Besides, the high costs associated with licensing agreements regarding music have allegedly caused it to shut down.
Impact on Users
Additionally, it has been secured that those subscribed to TikTok Music would be reimbursed the part of their subscription they have not consumed. The company has already started notifying users and has sent instructions on backing up playlists and migrating to other services ahead of the shutdown.
But what really sets this off is that TikTok Music was particularly great, integrated with the full app to let users quickly find full-length versions of songs that went viral across the platform. TikTok says that while TikTok Music is closing up shop, users will still be able to discover and listen to music through the main app, though no longer offering a full streaming service.
Reactions from the Music World
Shock waves have been felt throughout the music world due to the shutdown of TikTok Music, as it was the launching site for many independent artists. The influence of TikTok on music trends.
